A Huge Success!

HurrayWith more than 200 women who attended and participated in the first annual Vancouver Mompreneur Event - I believe it was a very huge success. The speakers were amazing and the energy in the room was palpable. You could feel the energy from all the moms sharing their ideas and knowledge with one another.

I believe it really helped moms who were just starting out with their business idea and were looking for help with how to take the next step. And with so much knowledge in the room, it was easy to see how worth while it was to attend for moms. But as I've always said - moms helping moms - that's what it's all about.

Initial Steps

In my last blog, I talked about the different types of businesses you can have when you are starting out. Now I want to mention the steps that you take, and things to consider about your idea.

These are suggestions only - but will get you thinking. Of course, there may be more steps for you, depending on the type of business that you choose, however, it will help illustrate the most common things that small business owners need to do when starting out.

School is Out!

PreschoolWell - the first year of Preschool is now over for my son. His last day this week turned out to be a wonderful, sunny afternoon. All the children had so much fun playing games and seeing their teacher one last time before the summer. They all received a diploma and a memory scrapbook containing pictures and artwork they completed throughout the year. They will definitely be going in the memory box for him! :)

Some exciting news to share is that I will be on Urban Rush next week (July 4) to discuss my consulting company and women who I have assisted with the start of their businesses.

HelpThe last installment of Home-Based Business Basics revolves around what resources are out there for women just starting out. It can be as easy as talking with other women who are doing it or finding a mentor who can keep you on track. Asking lots of questions is imperative to your success.

There are some other great resources out there that can help you with your business and provide you with the answers that you need - right from the get go.

Taking NotesFor the next few blogs I want to share some information on various aspects of creating a home-based business. If you are just starting out with your business idea, there is a lot to consider.

I have been down this road myself and want to share some of what I have learned with moms who are contemplating going in to business.

I think its best to first define the different types of businesses you can have and the things you will need to consider to make the right choice for you.

TGIF!

TGIFWell - we finally did it - we finally purchased another car. And yes, it was extremely stressful, just as I knew it would be. The vehicle we purchased for myself and the children is the Toyota RAV 4. It is silver and looks great. It has tons of space for the children and all my miscellaneous things and drives really well. I also feel very safe in it. And it only took a month of consistent tire kicking to do it!

My mom is still away on vacation and has only checked in ONCE with me to let me know how they are doing, That is really not good considering when I was younger, it was unacceptable for me not to phone every couple of days to let my parents know how I was - oh how things have changed....

Thomas the Train

ThomasThomas the train was featured in Squamish this weekend (and last weekend) at the West Coast Historical Park. I had tickets for 12 pm and thought I had given us plenty of time to get there when we left at 10am from White Rock. Not so.

Apparently it takes two hours to get to Squamish from White Rock and it wasn't until after I left that I realized the tickets said "Get there at least ONE hour prior to departure time". And it was pouring rain yesterday too. At 3 minutes to 12pm - we pulled up to the station. I told my husband to jump out with my son and RUN!!!! My daughter and I then proceeded down the one mile road to the parking lot to take a shuttle bus back in the rain.

Tidbits

NewspaperATTENTION to all moms out there who have purchased Thomas the Train items in the past few years. There is a recall for some of the trains and parts as they have determined that the surface paints on the recalled products contain lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects.

I checked and have SEVERAL of the items in question. Here is the link to go to to see the recall and how to get reimbursement and replacement for the items. http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml07/07212.html.

Time to Relax

RelaxOk - I am finally decompressing from last week's Mompreneur Event. I still find myself staring at the computer at midnight wondering why I'm there! I just have to get used to not having to worry about the Event anymore and all the details for it (until next year that is!). It really was such a success, and it was a true labour of love that took months of planning. If you haven't seen the pictures from the day - check it out under the "Workshops" tab.

As I mentioned in my last blog, more than 200 women attended and participated in the day. I have received so many wonderful and kind emails from moms who attended and showcased and thank you to all of you who wrote me this week - it really meant so much to hear from you.
